Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as individualized assistance. Services offered often include support with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, Alzheimer’s care, or skilled nursing care. Tennessee has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities governs this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include laundry services, medication administration, assistance with activities of daily living, and responsibility for the safety of the resident when in the community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening dosage packaging, reminding residents to take their medications, and observing the resident while taking medication. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as physical assessment, assistance with health services, recreational and social activities, and arrangements for visits by or to health care providers. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of fields. These include: nutrition, health care management, healthy lifestyles, and applicable state rules and regulations. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals, must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request, and must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards.
