Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers care, support, and supervision to medically stable seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The services provided often involve help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In some cases, communities may provide respite, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. Ohio has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health licenses this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activities, personal care, supervision, and intermittent nursing services. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include residents rights, job responsibilities, securing emergency assistance, and community procedures. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as health history, cognitive status review, functional status assessment, and psychical history. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders, assistance opening and taking medication, and handing medications to resident. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare.
