An assisted living community is a residential community which administers supervision, support, and aid to independent persons who do not require skilled nursing care. The types of service offered often involve support with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. In some instances, communities may provide skilled nursing, “aging in place”, or hospice. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment by a trained assessor and a nursing assessment. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements, provide three or more meals a day, all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science, and provide snacks between meals and before bed. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These include: dementia, first aid, dental care, and aging. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may observe and record medication side effects, residents may self-direct administration of medications, and staff may place containers within reach. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include social/recreational activities, medication services, health/safety services, and crisis intervention.
