This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science, provide three or more meals a day, provide snacks between meals and before bed, and staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include characteristics of residents’ disabilities, basic hygiene, residents’ rights, and emergency/evacuation procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include the community may remind residents to take medication, staff may place containers within reach, and residents may self-direct administration of medications. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 6 residents and one toilet for every 6 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a nursing assessment and assessment by a trained assessor.
