Assisted living communities offer organized living communities and assistance to people who might need help with things such as cooking or self-administering medication. The services provided often include help with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. In certain instances, communities may offer respite, skilled nursing care, or hospice. In Massachusetts, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $67,680 . Massachusetts maintains specific standards related to this type of community. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs licenses this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a qualified dietitian must review the residence’s dietary plans at least every 6 months, communities must use daily recommended dietary allowances as established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, a qualified dietitian must review residents’ dietary needs, and communities must provide up to three regularly scheduled meals daily. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff members obtain education in a number of fields. These include: 7-hour general orientation , Review of the aging process, Job requirements, and resident bill of rights. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment of residents need for assistance in emergency situations, assessment of residents current diagnoses and medical history, a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and assessment of residents ability to manage medications. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , management of self-administered prescription or over-the-counter medications, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, and timely assistance with urgent or emergency needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding residents to take medications, opening containers and pre-packaged medications, and reading the medication label to residents.
