An assisted living community is a residential community which administers assistance, care, and support to self-sufficient individuals who do not require skilled nursing services. The types of service provided often include assistance with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select instances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing care, or continuing care. In New Hampshire, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $72,000 . The state of New Hampshire has specific standards related to this type of community. New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health communities Administration licenses this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science, staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements, provide three or more meals a day, and provide snacks between meals and before bed. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision of residents with cognitive deficits, medication services, social/recreational activities, and emergency response. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may observe and record medication side effects, staff may place containers within reach, and residents may self-direct administration of medications. Staff members receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include resident assessment, dental care, residents’ rights, and emergency/evacuation procedures. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment by a trained assessor and a nursing assessment. There must be one toilet for every 6 residents and one bath or shower for every 6 residents. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
