Assisted living communities offer social interaction, healthcare, and supervision to people who are on average 65 years of age or older. The services offered often include support with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, respite, or hospice. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, and an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. Staff members receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living, behavior management, techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment, and orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with distribution, assistance with recreational activities, assistance with administration of medications, and 24-hour care. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
