An assisted living community is a residential community which provides care, aid, and supervision to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities often offer chances for recreational activity, supervision of care, and assistance with appointments and transit. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer nursing care, respite, or hospice. In Massachusetts, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $67,680 . Massachusetts maintains specific rules associated with this kind of community. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs governs this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment of residents current diagnoses and medical history, assessment of residents need for assistance in emergency situations, assessment of residents ability to manage medications, and assessment of the individual’s needs and preferences. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a qualified dietitian must review the residence’s dietary plans at least every 6 months, communities must provide up to three regularly scheduled meals daily, communities must use daily recommended dietary allowances as established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, and residence must provide or arrange for the availability of food selections that would permit a resident to adhere to a diet consistent with the most recent edition of Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program. Staff members obtain education in a number of subjects. These areas include Review of the aging process, elder abuse and neglect, Sanitation and food safety, and Resident health. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, timely assistance with urgent or emergency needs, assistance with activities of daily living , and management of self-administered prescription or over-the-counter medications. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include management of self-administered medications, reminding residents to take medications, and reading the medication label to residents.
