Assisted living communities offer apartment style housing and social interaction as well as individualized support. Assisted living communities usually offer help with appointments and transportation, care supervision, and chances for organized activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or nursing care. In Massachusetts, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $67,680 . The state of Massachusetts has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs governs this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening containers and pre-packaged medications, management of self-administered medications, and reading the medication label to residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment of allergies and dietary needs, assessment of residents ability to manage medications, assessment of residents need for assistance in emergency situations, and assessment of the individual’s needs and preferences. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include communication skills, 7-hour general orientation , Review of the aging process, and emergency policies and procedures. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must use daily recommended dietary allowances as established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, residence must provide or arrange for the availability of food selections that would permit a resident to adhere to a diet consistent with the most recent edition of Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a qualified dietitian must review residents’ dietary needs, and communities must provide up to three regularly scheduled meals daily. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, management of self-administered prescription or over-the-counter medications, timely assistance with urgent or emergency needs, and assistance with activities of daily living .
