An assisted living community is a residential community which provides support, care, and assistance to self-sufficient seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities commonly provide opportunities for social activity, care supervision, and aid with transportation and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer skilled nursing, respite, or hospice. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The state of Maryland maintains specific standards associated with this type of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene regulates this type of community. Staff are required to receive training in a number of areas. These include: Managers of programs licensed for five or more residents must complete 20 hours of Department-approved continuing education every 2 years, fire and life safety, including standard precautions, and basic first-aid. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications, reminders to take medications, and a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, and uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as ability to self-administer medication, treatment requirements, activities of daily living needs, and risk factor management needs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, meals must be varied, meals must be palatable, and meals must be well-balanced. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents
