Assisted living communities usually offer aid with appointments and transit, outings for leisurely activity, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, skilled nursing care, or continuing care. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The state of Maryland has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene regulates this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, assistance with self-administration of medications, assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, and monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of subjects. These areas include health and psychosocial needs, their individual job requirements, fire and life safety, and basic first-aid. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, meals must be varied, and meals must be properly prepared. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as problematic behaviors, treatment requirements, ability to self-administer medication, and a comprehensive mental and physical assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications, medication administration, and a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission.
