An assisted living community is a residential community which offers supervision, care, and assistance to self-sufficient individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities often offer outings for recreational activity, care supervision, and help with daily activities. In some instances, communities may offer respite, continuing care, or skilled nursing care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health governs this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, and documenting whether or not the resident took the medication. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include non-medical services, security, medication administration, and assistance with activities of daily living. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of areas. These include: hygiene, independence, resident rights, and disaster procedures. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals.
