Assisted Living

Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment style housing and social interaction as well as individual assistance. Services offered often include support with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, hospice, or nursing. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida has specific regulations associated with this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with self-administration of medications, nursing services, and personal care services. Staff are required to receive training in a number of areas. These areas include 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years on topics related to assisted living, 26 hours of training plus a competency test, universal precautions, and resident abuse, neglect, and and exploitation. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, reading the label, and licensed nursing staff may administer medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination report, community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , communities must document such assessment, and monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents preferences, the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, and meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities . This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
