Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides supervision, care, and aid to self-sufficient persons who do not require skilled nursing support. The services offered often involve help with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In select situations, communities may provide respite, “aging in place”, or nursing. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation supervises this type of community. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These areas include 26 hours of training plus a competency test, resident behavior and needs, reporting incidents, and community emergency procedures. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as communities must document such assessment, medical examination report, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community . This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , personal care services, assistance with self-administration of medications, and nursing services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, and the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the label, opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication, and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1.
