Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer recreational activities, oversight, and care to people who are around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities often offer assistance with appointments and transit, care supervision, and chances for recreational activity. In some cases, communities may provide nursing care, hospice, or “aging in place”. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation supervises this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, and the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, personal care services, nursing services, and assistance with activities of daily living . Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , medical examination report, and communities must document such assessment. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. Staff must receive education in a variety of fields. These include: reporting incidents, emergency evacuation, providing assistance with activities of daily living, and infection control. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, reading the label, and unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration.
