Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers assistance, care, and supervision to independent individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The types of service offered often involve support with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing, dementia care, or continuing care. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida maintains specific regulations related to this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation regulates this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , and meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication, placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, and staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These include: community sanitation procedures, resident abuse, neglect, and and exploitation, community emergency procedures, and 26 hours of training plus a competency test. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , medical examination report, community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and communities must document such assessment. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, assistance with activities of daily living , personal care services, and nursing services. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
