Assisted Living

Assisted living communities arrange organized living communities and aid to persons who require a helping hand with taking medication or dressing. Services provided often involve support with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, nursing, or hospice. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $13,916 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $12,699 . The state of Connecticut has specific rules associated with this kind of community. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing regulates this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident teaching, wellness counseling, assistance with self-administered medications, and provision of care and services to residents whose conditions are chronic and stable. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as RN conducts consultation with the resident, plan must include types and frequency of services needed, medications, treatments, and other required nursing services, and plan must include information about the resident’s problems and needs. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of subjects. These include: applicable regulations, aides must pass a competency exam, assisted living philosophy, and 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications, verifying, and medication administration . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
