Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment style housing and social events as well as individualized support. Services provided often involve help with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In certain cases, communities may offer respite, dementia care, or “aging in place”. The annual median cost for a private room is around $166,988 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $152,388 . The state of Connecticut has specific rules associated with this kind of community. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing supervises this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as RN conducts consultation with the resident, he program must be reviewed as the resident’s condition requires, plan must include types and frequency of services needed, and plan must include information about the resident’s problems and needs. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics, applicable regulations, community policies and procedures, and assisted living philosophy. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include provision of care and services to residents whose conditions are chronic and stable, medication administration, assistance with ADLs, and delegation of supervision of self-administered medications. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening medication packages, medication administration , and reminding residents to take medications.
