An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers care, aid, and supervision to healthy seniors who do not require skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities commonly offer outings for social activity, aid with appointments and transportation, and assistance with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing care, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California maintains specific standards related to this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division certifies this community type. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, and meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: recognizing signs and symptoms of dementia, resident supervision, knowledge required to safely assist with prescribed medications, and 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually.
