Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide care, social opportunities, and oversight to people around 65 years of age or older. The services offered often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. In some cases, communities may provide dementia care, respite, or continuing care. In Alabama, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $39,000 . The state of Alabama maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. Department of Public Health, Bureau of Health Provider Standards regulates this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general observation and health supervision, ADL assistance, coordination of medical transportation, and housekeeping. Staff members obtain training in a number of fields. These areas include signs and symptoms of dementia, confidentiality, basic first-aid, and needs of the elderly, mentally ill, and intellectually disabled. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination by a physician prior to admission and plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 2. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administration of medication if capable. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must meet the Dietary Reference Intakes of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, Alternate food selections must be available for residents on medically prescribed diets, Snacks and beverages must be available throughout the day and after the evening meal, and communities must serve daily at least three meals.
