Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination by a physician prior to admission and plan of care developed by the community in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administration of medication if capable. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must meet the Dietary Reference Intakes of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, Snacks and beverages must be available throughout the day and after the evening meal, communities must serve daily at least three meals, and Alternate food selections must be available for residents on medically prescribed diets. Staff must receive training in a variety of areas. These include: applicable rules and statutes, signs and symptoms of dementia, identifying and reporting abuse, neglect and exploitation, and needs of the elderly, mentally ill, and intellectually disabled. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include coordination of medical transportation, social activities, housekeeping, and medication services.
