Assisted living facilities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as personalized support. Services offered often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, facilities may provide respite, dementia care, or skilled nursing care. In Alabama, the annual median cost for an assisted living facility is around $39,000 . Alabama maintains specific statutes associated with this kind of facility. Department of Public Health, Bureau of Health Provider Standards supervises this facility type. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of facility is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this facility type is 2. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination by a physician prior to admission and plan of care developed by the facility in cooperation with the resident and, if appropriate, their representative. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administration of medication if capable. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must meet the Dietary Reference Intakes of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, Snacks and beverages must be available throughout the day and after the evening meal, facilities must serve daily at least three meals, and Alternate food selections must be available for residents on medically prescribed diets. Staff must receive training in a variety of areas. These include: applicable rules and statutes, signs and symptoms of dementia, identifying and reporting abuse, neglect and exploitation, and needs of the elderly, mentally ill, and intellectually disabled. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include coordination of medical transportation, social activities, housekeeping, and medication services.
