It is crowded but ...it accepts medicad

My mother lived there for nearly two months . It was not the place for her. Her dementia was becoming too bad. She was found lost wandering around and confused by me a few times. Before you place your parent in any assisted living make sure they will be coherent enough to find their room, operate an elevator and can walk the distance needed. This place is very crowded and confusing for someone with bad dementria. It is a bit worn and tired looking, they really need to replace the carpeting. The staff I have mixed reviews on, most try. The activity people are very good and there are a few really nice people working there. The dining hall was a nice experience for my mother. They accept medicaid but beware they will most likely be placed in a small 3 person room. The main problem I had with the place was the overcrowding , I hate to think of a fire in this place and what would happen. But reality is there is little choices for those who can't afford the private pay only places. So really depends on your parent , I think some adjusted pretty well to it and some living there do okay.

Not impressed

We looked at this place when we were looking into options for Mom, and we were not impressed at all. The overall quality was just low, especially for the price. It felt more like a warehouse than somewhere that people would live. I wouldn't have felt comfortable with my Mom staying here.

Institutional Looking

It was a beautiful setting and location but I was not willing to leave my brother there becasue we encountered to many people that were either senile, had severe Alzheimer's or were non-communicative. I simply could not see my brother living in a setting like that. I think it was institutional looking and so did my brother. I didn't want him to be there.

Appeared to be a nice place. But too much isolation in the assisted living area and dementia unit appeared too small and restricted-we actually never saw a resident nor a occupied room-a bit suspicious.

Needs Rehab

Toured approx 1 year ago for mom. The place has a great location, mom would have loved it, however the place needs a makeover and the smell of urine was everywhere. It was very big and I saw alot of areas unattended. Now my mom is in a wheelchair so I was not worried about her being unattended. If they ever redo and fix it up a bit I will be sure to bring mom.

Very run down

The lobby is lovely. Big deal!! The rooms are run down and dirty. A relative was there. I pulled out the AC filter and found it filthy. My family member was left to sleep during the day, missed meals, laundry mixed up. Case workers were late in calling back or did not return calls. So happy he was moved to a better facility.

Stay away

It was so bad. I would give the quality of care no stars if I could, it was horrible. For instance my mom was in a shared room and they put a Alzheimer's dementia patient in with her who was a kleptomaniac. She frightened my mother and they moved her out and then after that her care got even worse. I would tell others do not moved your loved ones in here.

Inappropriately Dressed Tour Guide

I was not impressed with my tour of this community. The lady that walked up to me to give me my tour of the facility was dressed very inappropriate. It made me think how is she really trying to sell this community. I would not have felt comfortable moving my wife to this community.

Sticky Fingers

My dad stayed there for a few months. He liked the people but hated the food. General staff was nice. Upper management is nice, when you are paying. My dad was hospitalized and left the facility but his things were still there. His phone and passport were stolen, with phone calls made to the Dominican Republic. Who knows what else "went missing". Workers have keys and can enter at will. I called the manager, Marvin, and he promised to follow up, which he didn't. Two letters later with no response. Cowardly, if you ask me. And foolish, too, because of social sites like this. I reported the theft to the police. Beware if your loved one has anything of value. There's a chance it will be stolen. And if your loved one is hospitalized, go over right away and gather up their valuables because they may disappear.

Do your own research! Just observe....and taste the food if they allow you to!

I took care of a relative that lived there for 4 years. If I was not actively involved, my relative would have been neglected. When she ordered food to be delivered, it was left at the front desk for an hour or more. Food provided in the dining room is limited in choice and does not taste good. (In contrast, the Bristal Assisted Living home is amazing and will provide visitors with samples to prove it.) As for Amber Court's cleanliness? Carpets in the room are not cleaned if spills occur. Counters in rooms are not cleaned either. Couches & seats often have urine on them... as do the residents. The activity room is run well despite the limited resources the management chooses to provide for entertainment. Laundry is not completed in a timely fashion and items are frequently lost despite having to write the resident's name on each item. The case workers do not get involved unless needed and beware of leaving anything valuable in this facility. Once a custodian took a large 'tip' from my relative for doing his job. The administration charges you for more services/care than are provided.

Not somewhere I'd choose for my loved one

I toured this community when I was looking into care options for my loved one. Overall I just wasn't impressed by what I saw here. It seemed crowded, and I did not like that there were shared bathrooms. I understand that they accept medicaid, and it is good that options like this are available for those in need, but it isn't somewhere I'd pick for a loved one if I had a choice.

So Disappointed

I live out of state and was eager to visit my aunt. I was disappointed and saddened by the conditions at Amber Court of Westbury. Although the receptionist at the front desk was very nice, no other employee greeted my aunt or any of our group during our visit. We spent quite a bit of time in the social areas… and we seemed to be an inconvenience. Employees were not motivated to help when simple requests were made. I had hoped/expected that the environment for the residents would be inviting, cozy and colorful… at least something that came across as warmth, but other than the entrance, it is shabby, barely decorated, and institutional. There is a strong smell of urine near the elevators. When we went to her room, there were clothes on the bed that had been laundered. When I went to help put them away, I was stunned to find that they were VERY damp. It was IMPOSSIBLE that the person who had that responsibility could have missed that. Evidently, that is a common occurrence. In addition, belongings of hers are frequently lost (or [Removed]?). There are numerous problems here. How could this facility meet the standards that are required by the board of health? How could it have received accreditation? Aren’t the employees accountable? Don’t they have frequent evaluations? There should be regularly scheduled training sessions that all employees are required to take as well. Sessions that explain dementia and its ramifications, that recommend techniques for dealing with challenges and develop compassion. As well as courses that teach professionalism and courtesy. Facilities that accept Medicaid are few, but I would not expect that they would be substandard. I would NOT recommend this place and hope that reviews of this nature will prompt some action to improve conditions for all the residents there.

IBe Sure That Your LOved one is in he right facility

Lake Shore Drive is a friendly, attractive facility located on well-known Lake Ronkonkama, a vacation attraction near the Eastern part of Long Island. It is a warm, friendly place, a family atmosphere prevails. However it is the wrong placement for my sister, who needs more care than she is receiving. When we brought her there a month ago she was assigned a pleasant room on the 3rd floor with a lovely room-mate. However, during the short time she has been there it has become apparent that she cannot perform the necessary requirements of daily living and needs more and more assistance for everything from getting out of bed to dressing and undressing herself and going to the bathroom.Lake Shore Assisted Living is not set up to offer this kind of assistance, The initial problem is that my sister was not properly evaluated and should never have been accepted.. Now, realizing that she needs to be transferred to a full nursing facility, they say that they can;t deal with this serious problem until some time next week. I believe that this facility is under-served and they are failing to serve the needs of the families and "the loved ones" they profess to care about. .
