Cost of Senior Living in New York, NY

The New York metropolitan area, largest in the nation, is also the third most expensive among the 30 metropolitan areas with the largest populations of adults 55 and older. Senior living in Manhattan and Queens together is nearly 10% more expensive than the metropolitan area as a whole, which includes parts of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Like the Boston and DC metros priced above it, the New York metro holds some of the most expensive senior living in the country and the region.

Staten Island has the second most expensive senior living costs - the most aligned of the boroughs to the metropolitan area as a whole. Senior living costs in Brooklyn somewhat lower than the whole metro area, in spite of recent gentrification. The Bronx is the least expensive of the five boroughs, although its average costs include a disparate mix of both affluent and some of the poorest congressional districts in the U.S.

How Senior Living Costs Compare to Residential Real Estate

  • Home prices in the New York area increased by 8.0% from 2014 to 2015 according to Redfin, a national real estate brokerage.
  • Senior living costs increased by 2.6% in the state of New York during that same period.
  • Homes in the New York area stayed on market for an average of 153 days in 2015.

What’s even more remarkable than the high cost of senior living in the Five Boroughs is that none of them make it into the top five most expensive cities in the New York metro. The hamlet of Armonk, where IBM has its world headquarters, makes number one. The idyllic village of Gladstone, New Jersey, makes a close second, followed by the village of Roslyn. Briarcliff Manor, historically known as home to the Vanderbilts, Astors and Rockefellers, makes fourth. Syosset rounds out the top five.
