Answer a few questions to get personalized results

Who are you searching for?

Balmy winters and beachside living make Pensacola a prime spot for retirees. Known for its historic districts and laid-back atmosphere, the city is on the smaller side at just around 52,000 year-round residents. However, it offers big value thanks to the area’s relatively low cost of living.

Seniors looking for assisted living facilities where they can remain somewhat independent while having access to 24-hour personal care have many options in Pensacola. There are nine assisted living facilities in Pensacola partnered with A Place for Mom, each offering a range of unique amenities and layouts. Many even come with kitchenette areas for a homey, comfortable setting even though meals are provided. All are within 10 miles of Pensacola’s downtown, and many aren’t far from some of Escambia County’s most popular and scenic Gulf Coast beaches.

Whether you’re searching for Pensacola assisted living arrangements for yourself or a loved one, this guide is designed to make the process smooth and simple. In addition to our partner assisted living facility listings, we’ve included a wide range of educational resources on this page. They do have social activities but I think that it would be great if they did an orientation for the new residents to get used to the community and have someone that they can speak to if they have some issues. It would be nice to meet monthly and check in with residents for any new things, issues or...

Navarre Gardens is a great place. We chose this facility at the time because of the location and it was a fairly new facility. They also had plenty of rooms open and the price was the best we could find. Overall, it has been a good experience and I would recommend them.

How people pay for assisted living in Pensacola

How will I cover the ongoing costs to relocate to an assisted living facility in Pensacola? It’s one of the most common questions seniors and families ask when considering relocating to assisted living in this warm, southern city along the clear Gulf of Mexico waters. The answer depends on your situation as well as the resources you have.

For example, many seniors move alone or with a spouse or partner to an assisted living facility and use their personal funds to cover all their costs. Others rely on a combination of personal savings and income as well as help from veterans benefits, Medicare, or Medicaid. Click on any of the tabs below to find out more about the top ways that retirees pay to live in assisted living in and around Pensacola and greater Escambia County.

Private pay methods

Many seniors spend their lives building up nest eggs in the forms of cash savings and equity in a home or investments. Some also receive regular deposits from Social Security, an IRA, pensions, and veterans-based programs. All of these private funds and individualized funding streams can be used to help pay for out-of-pocket assisted living costs like rent and add-on fees in Pensacola.

VA benefits
4867

Number of veterans who live in Pensacola

About 19% of Pensacola veterans are 75+

There’s no doubt that Pensacola is a welcoming city for retired members of the military. Featuring a well-known naval base, plenty of veteran-focused monuments, and a strong maritime heritage, both Pensacola and greater Escambia County are supportive of anyone who has provided service to the country.

VA Pensions

If you (or your loved one) served in the military or is a spouse of someone who served, veterans benefits may assist in covering some costs associated with relocating to assisted living in Florida. For example, an ongoing VA Pension could provide a consistent source of income to offset rent or even provide extra money for errands, shopping, and activities. Because you must qualify per very specific eligibility standards for the VA Pension, it’s important to do your homework before submitting any paperwork. A dedicated veterans services officer should be able to help you determine if the VA Pension is a good fit based on your or your loved one’s relationship with the military.

Aid and Attendance benefit

In addition to the VA Pension, the VA also makes an Aid and Attendance benefit available to qualifying applicants. The Aid and Attendance benefit is yet another funding stream that is deposited into an account to be used for anything, including assisted living fees. Seniors who already receive a VA Pension aren’t disqualified from applying for the Aid and Attendance benefit. This means if you meet the requirements for both, you could receive both sources of money.

Help getting VA benefits

The VA Pension and Aid and Attendance benefits are just two ways to get more money to use for your assisted living housing needs in Pensacola. However, navigating all the other programs can be a little overwhelming, especially if you’re in the midst of also trying to figure out the best assisted living community for you or a relative.

Consider contacting someone in the area who routinely helps veterans and their families. For instance, you could contact the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs (FDVA) or the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. Veterans services officers are your best bet for receiving assistance. These trained professionals can be found at veterans services organizations (VSOs) that serve the veteran population of Pensacola and the surrounding municipalities or the Escambia County Veterans Services Office.

Medicaid

Medicaid is a program designed to support those who meet low-income criteria to cover their health care needs. If you are approved to receive Medicaid benefits, it won’t cover room and board in an assisted living facility. However, you can apply for a home and community based services (HCBS) waiver (also referred to as a 1915(c) waiver) to offset the cost of being cared for by medical professionals in an assisted living setting. A doctor must say this in-home care is medically needed.

There are many types of HCBS waivers available to qualifying seniors who are living in Pensacola as Florida residents. These include the FL Long-Term Care Waiver, Florida Long-Term Managed Care (FL-17) benefit, FL Developmental Disabilities Individual Budgeting Waiver, FL Familial Dysautonomia Waiver, FL Model Waiver, and Florida Managed Medical Assistance (MMA). However, this is certainly not an exhaustive list. You or your loved one may be eligible to apply for other waivers and benefits depending on income or health needs.

Applying for Medicaid

The Medicaid system can be challenging to understand and navigate. In Florida, Medicaid is simply called Florida Medicaid and is run by the Agency for Health Care Administration. This agency handles all Medicaid application forms. Be aware that even if you are eligible for Medicaid and submit an application, you may have to wait a while for approval and to receive coverage.

You may also want to contact someone at the HHS Region 4 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)/Health and Human Services (HHS) Regional Office, the Northwest Florida Area Agency On Aging, Inc., or set up an appointment with a long-term care ombudsman.

Medicare

Medicare is another type of federal program that’s meant to cover short-term medically necessary visits, treatments, and other health care needs of seniors who are age 65 and older. Though Medicare won’t cover room and board costs associated with being part of an assisted living community, it can pay for physician visits and offset drug costs.

To learn more about Medicare, you can contact the Pensacola Social Security Administration office or the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, called Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders or SHINE in Florida. The long-term care ombudsman or someone in the Aging & Adult Service office at the Florida Department of Elder Affairs can also help.

Additional Medicare-Supportive Programs in Pensacola

Once you’ve joined Medicare, you may want to look into other ways to save on health care costs. For instance, the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration offers Medicare Savings Programs, which can help cover the cost of Medicare’s deductibles and copayments. The Florida Discount Drug Program may make the cost of certain prescription drugs lower, which allows you to pay less out of pocket for the medications you need. The more funds that can be paid by other entities, the more you’ll have to cover your assisted living and necessary daily living financial obligations.

Understand Florida laws and regulations for assisted living facilities

All assisted living facilities in the state of Florida are required to be licensed by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration’s Bureau of Health Facility Regulation. Facilities can be licensed as either standard or specialty depending upon the services they offer to their residents.

As an example, an assisted living facility with special options such as a secured memory care unit would need to comply with standards that might be beyond those required by an assisted living facility. Licensing helps protect you or your loved one in many ways, such as making certain that all operations are resident-centered and buildings are secure.

To keep tabs on the expected performance of assisted living communities, routine inspections are performed. Every inspection cross-checks the assisted living facility against a number of criteria, including space and capacity limitations, resident-to-staff ratios, and more. You have the right to see any assisted living facility’s inspection report through this facility finder site. The AHCA also provides a full list of any facilities that have been noted as deficient in some areas. After your (or your relative’s) move to an assisted living community, you can always make a report online to share any concerns or observations with the AHCA.

The most important thing to remember is that all licensed assisted living facilities must meet or exceed set standards. From staff training and nutritional programming to compliance with Escambia County zoning requirements, each facility is mandated to take residents’ care, comfort, and concerns seriously.

COVID-19 regulations for Pensacola assisted living facilities

In Escambia County, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that COVID-19 cases are at low levels. And assisted living facilities in Florida don’t have to follow specific COVID-19 guidelines. Nevertheless, they and their residents should follow best practices to reduce the transmission of any communicable disease.

Vaccinations.

Florida makes it easy for anyone who is healthy enough to receive a free COVID-19 vaccine to register for it online. If you’re homebound and unable to leave an assisted living facility to travel to get your COVID-19 vaccine or booster, contact HomeboundVaccine@em.myflorida.com, a program that will come to people’s homes to give COVID-19 shots.

Masking.

By masking up, you can help protect yourself and others from COVID-19 and the flu when you’re feeling sick. However, masks are not a requirement in Pensacola.

Facility cleanliness.

Many assisted living facilities have implemented strategic hygiene practices to improve the sanitization and spotlessness of their communities for the benefit of residents, staff, and visitors.

Social distancing.

Like masking, social distancing (standing at least six feet apart from the nearest person) can make it harder to spread or contract an airborne illness.

Quarantining.

If you believe or know you have contracted COVID-19, you may be advised to isolate. Typically, the isolation period is recommended to be five days to eliminate your chances of giving someone else COVID-19.

What to expect from assisted living in Pensacola

A Place for Mom currently partners with nine assisted living facilities within 10 miles of Pensacola’s waterfront downtown. If you’re looking for more assisted living facilities, you can find three others within a 25-mile radius of the city and within the suburbs.

Thanks to the aging-in-place movement, the majority of our partner assisted living facilities you’ll find in this guide aren’t stand-alone facilities. Instead, they’re progressive, combined communities that include other types of living arrangements. For instance, an assisted living facility may be connected with an adult day center or memory care units. The goal of this type of progressive layout is to ensure that residents can transition gracefully as their medical needs evolve.

Apartments designed for individualism and independence

Though every Pensacola assisted living facility we partner with offers unique kinds of apartments, such as studio-style and one-bedroom units, you’ll discover that they’re architecturally designed to be accommodating and comfortable. Many feature kitchenettes so you can make snacks for yourself or while entertaining visitors. All have extra-wide doorways and accessible bathrooms to make staying healthy and doing the activities of daily living easier, even if you’re in a wheelchair or use another assistive device.

This doesn’t mean that you’re on your own all the time, though. Residents at our partner assisted living communities in Pensacola enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing that a staff member is always nearby. Staff can help with everything from medication management to helping you get dressed and more. Their presence gives residents the chance to live life on their terms, even if they need occasional help buttoning a jacket or remembering which pharmaceuticals to take at night.

Activities that support education, entertainment, and enjoyment

All of our partner assisted living facilities you’ll read about here have an activity director. The activity director’s role is to make sure residents have plenty of options when it comes to recreation and hobbies. Classes on the culinary arts, happy hours, fitness programs, and regular indoor and outdoor celebrations are just some of the activities available at assisted living facilities.

It’s important to note that activities aren’t relegated to the community’s grounds, either. Every assisted living community we partner with arranges for residents to go along on day trips and outings so they can enjoy the refreshing Gulf Coast breeze. And if you or your loved one wants to go somewhere special, you can take advantage of low- or no-cost transportation services at most of our partner facilities.

Cuisine with a chef-inspired flair

Even if you have a kitchenette, you’ll want to taste some on-site meals prepared at your assisted living community. Since assisted living facilities offer residents at least three meals per day, they tend to rotate their menu with plenty of tempting choices. You can indulge in tasty dishes in multiple ways, such as by ordering room service or eating in the dining room.

The majority of assisted living facilities we partner with are happy to design meals around residents’ preferred dietary needs. For example, you can ask for low-sodium, vegetarian, or vegan meals. Ultimately, the goal is for you or your relatives to be able to leave every breakfast, lunch, and dinner feeling satisfied.

Transportation for seniors in Pensacola

Most residents get around the city or head to the waterfront by using their private vehicles, taking advantage of public transportation, or hiring rideshare companies. Since most of the assisted living facilities in Pensacola offer free or low-cost transportation, you or your loved one may be able to get automatic rides to the beach, shops, and interesting landmarks. In fact, transportation is free at 89% of our partner facilities, and 78% provide certain rides at cost.

Getting on the ECAT

Do you prefer to take advantage of public transportation whenever possible? The Escambia County Area Transit system offers the ECAT bus line. This line covers Pensacola and operates seven days a week, although not all buses run on the weekends. You’ll find that all ECAT buses are accessible. They also have bike racks. But if regular ECAT buses aren’t comfortable based on your needs, you may want to try the curb-to-curb ECAT ADA option available to those with disabilities living in the area.

Speciality Rides in Pensacola

Do you need to get to a medical appointment? Your physician may be able to give you a voucher so you can use the ECMS Foundation’s Go Seniors! Transportation Program. It’s meant only for health care visits and costs $20. You may also be able to get a ride through the free ECCT Paratransit Services program. Just be advised that you’ll need to call a day in advance to use ECCT services, and transportation availability isn’t guaranteed.

Freedom To Go is an additional private transportation service that seniors can use to get around Pensacola. Their drivers will escort you to doctor appointments, the grocery store, or even brunch with friends Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Prices often change due to gas price fluctuations.

Getting around on foot

There are some parts of Pensacola that are walkable. However, Pensacola only gets 36 out of 100 for its walkability score. The rating is based on Walk Score, which measures how walkable cities are in comparison with each other.[06]

Senior activities in Pensacola

Pensacola has an atmosphere and history that’s unique from other cities in Florida. Because of its location along the state’s panhandle as well as the warm and clear northern shores of the Gulf of Mexico, the city has become a retirement magnet for seniors. In fact, it was named one of the top places to retire by The U.S. News and World Report.[07]

Not surprisingly, you’ll find that many of Pensacola’s top things to do have outdoor components. After all, the area offers a temperate climate year-round. It does get a little humid and sticky at times, though. That’s when you’ll want to move your festivities and excursions indoors to explore the area’s museums, shops, and restaurants.

A city of surf, sand, and pristine beaches

If the idea of being close to countless white, sandy beaches appeals to you, Pensacola is your town. Some of the most popular public surfside locations around 50 miles of shoreline are Langdon Beach, Dog Beach, Park West, Quietwater Beach, Opal Beach, and Casino Beach. However, you’ll want to make sure that you start your beach excursions at Pensacola Beach.

What makes Pensacola Beach the preferred spot for residents and tourists? The answer lies in its inherent amenities. Pensacola Beach is well-maintained and offers comfortable facilities. It also boasts a 1,500-foot pier. From dawn until dusk, you’ll find people fishing, strolling, and taking pictures of the scenic view.

As long as you have transportation, you might want to set aside a day to head to the Gulf Island National Seashore. Both Perdido Key Beach and Johnson Beach attract visitors year-round. However, only the latter has an on-duty lifeguard.

Museums, sightseeing, and attractions

When you’re in Pensacola, be sure to take advantage of all its museums and unique attractions. Perhaps one of the most well-known is the Pensacola Lighthouse and Maritime Museum. Situated on the Naval Air Station, the museum features countless exhibits. You’ll learn quite a bit about naval history while you’re there. And though only the first floor is wheelchair accessible, it’s still a must-see.

Another nod to military members and operations is The National Naval Aviation Museum. With its free general admission, it’s always a big draw. Plus, you may be able to see the famous Blue Angels practice while you’re there.

Are you looking for more museums and related attractions? Head to the interactive Historic Pensacola Village, designed to give you a taste of the bygone lifestyles of the people who built the region. Those ages 65 and older get discounted ticket rates at this fun site. Be sure to join a tour group to make the most of your experience.

For those new to Pensacola, taking a Pensacola Bay City Ferry ride can be an excellent way to get a fast overview of the city. Throughout the year, you can get on a regular or themed ferry cruise. After cruising, you might want to do a little “landlubbing” touring courtesy of Go Retro. This tour involves being driven on an updated 1930s Ford transit bus throughout Pensacola. An expert tour guide will be sure you don’t miss any of the notable statues, buildings, or stories that make the city a one-of-a-kind site to live and visit.

Golfing, exercising, and staying healthy

Most seniors these days are living longer and trying to stay as active as they can. Not surprisingly, Pensacola — with its large retirement population — is a great place to maintain your physical fitness level. Golfing is one pleasure that no duffer can pass up, especially with well-maintained greens at Lost Key Golf Club, Cypress Lakes Golf Club, Stonebrook Golf Club, The Club at Hidden Creek, and all the other courses GolfPass recommends.[08]

Those interested in pickleball can either bring a partner to play at one of the area parks or racket sports facilities. If you’re interested in finding a pickleball tournament or partner, head to the Pensacola Panhandle Pickleball Facebook group. Alternatively, you may want to become a member of the Bear Levin Studer Family YMCA. When you do, you’ll have access not just to pickleball courts but also to the YMCA’s other amenities, like cardio classes and aquatics programming.

After fueling your inner athlete, you can always support others at the Blue Wahoos Ballpark along Pensacola Bay. During baseball season, the park is home to the area’s minor-league baseball team.

Senior living outside assisted living communities

Although you shouldn’t have any trouble finding something to do in your assisted living facility, you don’t always have to stay within your community. The Bayview Senior Resource Center is perfect for people who are over age 50 and want to gather together and enjoy programs arranged for older adults. Another resource is the PSC Senior Citizens Club on the PSC Pensacola campus Student Center. The PSC Senior Citizens Club meets monthly and always has a theme for their Tuesday events.

Remember that, like all cities, Pensacola has a wide range of coffee shops, eateries, bistros, and dining establishments. This means you’ll never be that far from some of your favorite cuisine flavors. Whether you’re tempted by authentic Italian fare, or you’re in the mood for baked goods sourced from local organic ingredients, you can find palate-pleasers in Pensacola.
