Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

Beginning in the 1880s, the community known as Cedar Park was a simple day-trip destination for residents of Austin who’d take the train north and stroll through a newly built park near the rural depot. Then, as planned communities began springing up in the 1950s, the suburb developed steadily and in proportion with the nearby Texas capital. By the mid-2010s, Greater Austin was firmly among the fastest-growing urban areas in the entire U.S., and Cedar Park today is a thriving suburban town attracting more families every year.

Nearby Lake Travis provides Cedar Park with countless outdoor activities, whether it’s boating, windsurfing, hiking, fishing, or ziplining. In the heart of town, the Cedar Park Sculpture Garden is an outdoor exhibit of rotating works by various artists, along with a walking trail weaving throughout the garden. History buffs of any age could spend hours at the Texas Museum of Science and Technology — which features the Austin area’s first planetarium and a permanent collection of dinosaur bones and other fossils — before heading over to the Austin Steam Train Association for a timeless excursion on a vintage passenger train car into the surrounding Hill Country of Central Texas.

Transportation

The Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority, or Capital Metro, operates out of nearby Austin and provides public transportation via bus, commuter rail, and paratransit services. Capital Metro has a bus route that extends to Cedar Park and includes several stops throughout town. For seniors on Medicaid who have no other means of transportation, the Medical Transportation Program provides rides to medical appointments. Visit the Texas Health and Human Services Commission’s website to find out about additional transportation assistance programs in Cedar Park.
