Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers supervision, care, and assistance to self-sufficient seniors who do not need skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities usually offer assistance with transit and appointments, aid with daily activities, and supervision of care. In certain instances, communities may offer respite, continuing care, or hospice. Wisconsin has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, and community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These include: needs assessment of prospective residents, community policies and procedures, job responsibilities, and first-aid. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, and these meals must meet residents special dietary needs. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include information and referral, health monitoring, leisure time activities, and activity programming for persons with dementia.
