Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers care, assistance, and supervision to medically stable persons who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The services provided often involve assistance with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. Wisconsin maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) licenses this type of community. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: job responsibilities, first-aid, reporting abuse, and resident rights. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, and these meals must meet residents special dietary needs. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, and Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, and initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident-specific services, supervision, activity programming for persons with dementia, and behavior management.
