Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

Richmond is the capital of Virginia and one of the oldest states in the Union. The city is filled with a wide variety of historical and cultural opportunities ranging from colonial history to contemporary art. This is why living in Richmond, VA is a great option for any active senior. One of the most historically significant locations in Virginia is St. John’s Church, where Founding Father Patrick Henry famously decried “Give me liberty or give me death.” The American Civil War Museum is another important historical location which was once the home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and which houses a large archive of information on the American Civil War.

The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden offers a lovely stroll through its vast array of flora housed in its domed conservatory. A popular spot for outdoor recreation is Maymont, a 100-hundred acre Victorian estate filled with walking paths and beautiful flower beds. The estate also has a carriage museum and a native wildlife exhibit. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has works by Goya and Picasso on display, as well as a dedicated gallery of ancient Egyptian artifacts, and a display of Faberge Eggs.


Richmond has limited options for public transit. Bus routes are operated by the Greater Richmond Transit Company which offers reduced fares for seniors and Medicare customers. The Pulse Line is scheduled to open soon and will offer high frequency bus routes in the West End, the Museum and VCU district, Downtown, and the East End.
