Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment-style housing and social interaction as well as individualized support. The services provided often involve assistance with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing, “aging in place”, or hospice. Virginia has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Virginia Department of Social Services regulates this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, The community must have a medication management plan that is reviewed and approved by the Department., and a licensed health care professionall must annually review all residents medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three nutritious meals must be provided each day, Periodic oversight of special diets by a dietitian or nutritionist, and bedtime and between meal snacks must be available. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as Initial comprehensive assessment and develop a care plan with the input of the resident, family, direct care staff, case manager, and health care providers, as relevant. Staff must obtain training in a number of fields. These include: hand-washing techniques, standard precautions, and infection risk reduction behavior, confidential treatment of personal information, Residents rights and responsibilities, and Specific duties and requirements of their positions. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver program–Virginia Alzheimer s Assisted Living. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include periodic health care and oversight through a licensed health care professionall, Promote a sense of security and self-worth, Assessing residents for whom restraints are in us, and 24-hour supervision. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
