Assisted living communities arrange organized living communities and aid for persons who might require a helping hand with everyday activities such as self-administering medication or bathing. The services provided often include assistance with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, hospice, or nursing care. Texas has specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities governs this community type. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive assessment , must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and interviews, and home visits. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, and exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general supervision or oversight, activity and/or social program for residents, supervision or direct administration of medications, and assistance with activities of daily living. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents may self-administer their own medication, obtaining medications from a pharmacy, and returning medications to the proper locked areas. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include basic principles of management, abuse/neglect, assisted living standards, and resident and provider rights and responsibilities.
