Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer recreational activities, oversight, and personal care to individuals around 65 years of age or older. The types of service offered often include assistance with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In some instances, communities may provide nursing, “aging in place”, or Alzheimer’s care. Texas has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities governs this type of community. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, a comprehensive assessment , and interviews, and home visits. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include obtaining medications from a pharmacy, assisting residents with taking medications, and reminders to take medications at the prescribed time. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, and menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activity and/or social program for residents, personal care, supervision or direct administration of medications, and general supervision or oversight. Staff members obtain training in a variety of areas. These include: confidentiality, financial management, basic principles of management, and federal laws.
