Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as personalized support. Assisted living communities commonly provide outings for social activity, assistance with the activities of daily life, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or skilled nursing. The state of Texas has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities certifies this type of community. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include returning medications to the proper locked areas, residents may self-administer their own medication, and obtaining medications from a pharmacy. Staff members obtain training in a number of areas. These areas include assisted living standards, basic principles of management, skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics, and federal laws. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, and The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, a comprehensive assessment , and interviews, and home visits. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, activity and/or social program for residents, general supervision or oversight, and supervision or direct administration of medications.
