Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and health care to persons who need a helping hand with everyday activities such as dressing or cooking. Assisted living communities frequently offer aid with transportation and appointments, aid with the activities of daily life, and care supervision. In select cases, communities may provide hospice, skilled nursing care, or respite. The state of Texas has specific rules related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities governs this community type. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activity and/or social program for residents, assistance with activities of daily living, general supervision or oversight, and supervision or direct administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, and The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include community resources, confidentiality, resident characteristics (including dementia), and financial management. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, interviews, and home visits, and a comprehensive assessment . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include obtaining medications from a pharmacy, residents may self-administer their own medication, and returning medications to the proper locked areas.
