Assisted living communities have the luxury of regular social interaction and apartment style housing as well as personalized help. The types of service offered often involve support with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or continuing care. Texas has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities governs this type of community. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 10 residents. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive assessment , interviews, and home visits, and must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include returning medications to the proper locked areas, obtaining medications from a pharmacy, and assisting residents with taking medications. Staff must receive education in a number of fields. These include: assisted living standards, resident characteristics (including dementia), abuse/neglect, and accessibility requirements. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision or direct administration of medications, activity and/or social program for residents, assistance with activities of daily living, and general supervision or oversight. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, and menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board.
