Assisted living communities administer social opportunities, care, and oversight to individuals who are around 65 years old. Assisted living communities often offer help with daily activities, chances for organized activity, and aid with transit and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, dementia care, or continuing care. The state of South Carolina has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing supervises this type of community. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs and three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with ADLs, transportation, medication assistance, and at least one structured recreation activity each day. Staff are required to receive training in a number of subjects. These areas include management/care of persons with contagious and/or communicable disease, Care of persons specific to the physical/mental condition being cared for in the community, procedures for checking and recording vital signs, and Basic first-aid. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer routine medications, staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision, and monitor blood sugar levels. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as dietary needs, assessing the extent of residents problems and needs, assistance with ADLs for the resident, and recreational and social activities that are suitable, desirable, and important to the resident s well-being. In total, there can be no more than 3 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
