Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide supervision, social events, and personal care to individuals who are around 65 years old. The types of service offered often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, respite, or skilled nursing. South Carolina has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing certifies this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assistance with ADLs for the resident, requirements and arrangements for visits by or to physicians or other authorized health providers, assessing the extent of residents problems and needs, and dietary needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include at least one structured recreation activity each day, medication assistance, transportation, and assistance with ADLs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include special menus are provided for those with special dietary needs and three meals and snacks that meet dietary needs. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 3 residents per room. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer routine medications, staff may self administer medications under licensed staff supervision, and monitor blood sugar levels. Staff must receive education in a variety of subjects. These include: procedures for checking and recording vital signs, occupational safety and health administration standards regarding blood-borne pathogens, Care of persons specific to the physical/mental condition being cared for in the community, and Basic first-aid. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan..
