Assisted living communities provide care, social interaction, and oversight to persons who are on average 65 years old. Assisted living communities often provide care supervision, aid with transportation and appointments, and chances for organized activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, hospice, or skilled nursing care. Ohio has specific regulations related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health governs this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include intermittent nursing services, medication administration, assistance with self-administration of medication, and personal care. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. Staff must receive training in a number of subjects. These include: job responsibilities, community procedures, securing emergency assistance, and residents rights. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as psychological history, medication review, psychical history, and medical diagnoses. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance organizing medication, observation, and assistance opening and taking medication.
