An assisted living community is a residential community which offers assistance, care, and support to self-sufficient seniors who do not need skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities often offer supervision of care, assistance with transit and appointments, and help with daily activities. In some situations, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, respite, or hospice. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey maintains a number of provisions related to this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services licenses this type of community. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These include: emergency plans and procedures, pain management, assisted living concepts, and Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include recreational activities, dietary services, pharmaceutical services, and assist with personal care. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, a health care assessment, a level of care assessment, and routines and preferences. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, monitor dosage, and supervise and assist with self-administration of medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances.
