Assisted living communities provide healthcare, oversight, and social interaction to people who are about 65 years of age or older. Services provided often involve aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. In some situations, communities may offer respite, “aging in place”, or dementia care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey has specific rules related to this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services regulates this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, and monitor dosage. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include limited nursing care, pharmaceutical services, transportation, and dietary services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, a level of care assessment, a health care assessment, and routines and preferences. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of fields. These include: caring for residents with impairment, assisted living concepts, emergency plans and procedures, and abuse and neglect. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and provide three meals a day. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports.
