An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers supervision, support, and care to self-sufficient seniors who do not need skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities often provide chances for organized activity, aid with the activities of daily life, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, respite, or dementia care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey has specific statutes related to this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services certifies this community type. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, monitor dosage, and administer medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, provide three meals a day, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as routines and preferences, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, a level of care assessment, and nursing needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include pharmaceutical services, assist with personal care, transportation, and limited nursing care. Staff members obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include abuse and neglect, emergency plans and procedures, pain management, and infection control/prevention.
