Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers care, assistance, and supervision to independent individuals who do not need skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities usually offer supervision of care, help with appointments and transit, and opportunities for leisurely activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, respite, or nursing care. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $10,494 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $9,581 . The state of New Hampshire has specific statutes related to this type of community. New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health communities Administration certifies this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science, provide three or more meals a day, provide snacks between meals and before bed, and staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements. Staff members obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: aging, first aid, dental care, and residents’ rights. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 6 residents and one bath or shower for every 6 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment by a trained assessor and a nursing assessment. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision of residents with cognitive deficits, assistance arranging medical/dental appointments, social/recreational activities, and health/safety services. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents may self-direct administration of medications, staff may place containers within reach, and the community may remind residents to take medication.
