Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer oversight, social opportunities, and care to individuals who are around 65 years of age or older. Services offered often involve support with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and assessment. In certain situations, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or nursing. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation supervises this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of areas. These include: orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities, techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment, 24 hours of additional training on interview skills, and fire safety. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, and a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include protective oversight, assistance with storage of medications, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, and assistance with activities of daily living .
