An assisted living community is a residential community which offers supervision, support, and assistance to independent persons who are not in need of skilled nursing services. The types of service provided often include support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. In some situations, communities may provide nursing care, respite, or dementia care. In Michigan, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,000 . The state of Michigan has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Human Services licenses supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan takes into account the preferences and competency of the resident, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, and service plan identifies the individual’s specific needs for care. Staff are required to receive training in a number of fields. These areas include containment of infectious disease, personal care, first-aid, and residents rights and responsibilities. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, and proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervised personal care, reminding resident of important activities to be carried out, assisting a resident to keep appointments, and being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council.
