Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment style housing and social interaction as well as individualized help. Assisted living communities frequently provide help with the activities of daily life, care supervision, and help with appointments and transit. In some instances, communities may provide “aging in place”, skilled nursing care, or respite. In Massachusetts, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $67,680 . Massachusetts has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs governs this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include management of self-administered prescription or over-the-counter medications, assistance with activities of daily living , timely assistance with urgent or emergency needs, and assistance with instrumental activities of daily living. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These areas include Communicable diseases, management of self-administered medications, 7-hour general orientation , and financial exploitation. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observing residents while they take the medication, reminding residents to take medications, and reading the medication label to residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a qualified dietitian must review the residence’s dietary plans at least every 6 months, communities must provide up to three regularly scheduled meals daily, a qualified dietitian must review residents’ dietary needs, and qualified dietitian must counsel residents regarding therapeutic diets and other dietary issues. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment of residents ability to manage medications, assessment of allergies and dietary needs, assessment of residents current diagnoses and medical history, and a comprehensive mental and physical assessment.
