An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers care, assistance, and supervision to independent seniors who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually offer assistance with the activities of daily life, care supervision, and outings for leisurely activity. In some instances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or continuing care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has specific standards associated with this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health regulates this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These include: neglect prevention, promotion of dignity, philosophy and goals, and infection control. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision of self-administered medications, security, medication administration, and assistance with activities of daily living. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, medication administration, and only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room.
