Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and aid to persons who may need support with things such as dressing or cooking. Assisted living communities usually offer assistance with daily activities, opportunities for recreational activity, and assistance with transportation and appointments. In some situations, communities may provide hospice, “aging in place”, or dementia care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois maintains specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health licenses this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, laundry, supervision of self-administered medications, and security. Staff must receive education in a number of subjects. These include: independence, job responsibilities and limitations, infection control, and neglect prevention. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the medication label to residents, supervision of self-administered medications, and observing the resident. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, and assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program.
