Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers support, supervision, and aid to medically stable seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Services offered often include assistance with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, respite, or skilled nursing. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia maintains specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested, assisting with an Epi pen, and assisting residents with storage of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include assistance with medications, assisting residents in transferring and ambulation, identification of conduct constituting abuse and neglect, and emergency first-aid and CPR. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living care, the provision of assisted self-preservation, described as personal services, and administration of medications by a certified medication aide. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, personal preferences relative to care needs, and assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs.
