Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide residential communities and health care for people who might require help with things such as cooking food or showering. Assisted living communities often offer chances for leisurely activity, aid with daily activities, and assistance with appointments and transit. In select situations, communities may offer respite, hospice, or “aging in place”. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes regulates this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living care, the provision of assisted self-preservation, described as personal services, and administration of medications by a certified medication aide. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, A written care plan must document the assessment findings, and assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested, cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications , and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These include: emergency preparedness, provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful, Medical and social needs and characteristics of the resident population, and training necessary to carry out assigned job duties.
