Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide oversight, recreational activities, and care to individuals around 65 years old. The types of service provided often involve aid with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select situations, communities may offer nursing, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia maintains specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes certifies this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, assisting residents with self-administration, and assisting residents with storage of medications. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include attendance policies, emergency preparedness, Medical and social needs and characteristics of the resident population, and exploitation of a resident. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, the provision of assisted self-preservation, assisted living care, and described as personal services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A written care plan must document the assessment findings, assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, personal preferences relative to care needs, and care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs.
