Assisted living communities offer a sense of community as well as personalized help. Assisted living communities often offer aid with daily activities, help with appointments and transit, and care supervision. In some situations, communities may provide respite, hospice, or dementia care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia has specific regulations related to this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes licenses this community type. Staff are required to receive education in a number of fields. These include: assisting residents in transferring and ambulation, provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful, assistance with medications, and emergency first-aid and CPR. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as whether family supports are available, care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, and personal preferences relative to care needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with storage of medications, assisting residents with self-administration, and assisting with an Epi pen. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, assisted living care, described as personal services, and the provision of assisted self-preservation.
